Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect at a class?

You don't need to pre-register or wear special clothing. Simply show up at the location, and someone will greet you and help you sign in. Then, the teacher will begin by guiding a short breathing meditation. This will be followed by a teaching on a spiritual technique used to help us deepen our inner peace. After the lecture, there is a discussion and Q&A session. The class will end with a short guided meditation.

Do I need to pre-register for the general program classes?

No, you can just attend, you don't need to pre-register.

Can I attend the classes if I've never meditated before and am a complete beginner?

Yes. The classes are introductory and suitable for beginners. People with more experience with meditation can also take the classes and receive great benefit.

Do I have to wait for the next series of classes to begin?

No. Each class is self-contained. You can attend only one class or the whole series.

Is it better to attend the whole series of classes, or is it okay if I just go to a few of the classes?

Attending the entire series of classes is highly beneficial because each class builds on the next. However, each class is taught in such a way that if you only attend one class, you will derive great meaning from it. Any amount of meditation you do will help, so don't worry if you can't attend the whole series.

How much do the classes cost?

General Program Classes cost $12. Guided Meditation Classes cost $10.

How do I pay for the classes?

You can pay at the class when you attend using cash or check.

Do I need to pre-register for day courses and empowerments?

It is helpful to the event coordinators if you pre-register. However, you can still attend these events, even without pre-registration if seats are available.

What is the difference between General Program Classes and Guided Meditation Classes?

General Program Classes contain teachings about various aspects of Buddhism. Guided Meditation Classes are based on The Meditation Handbook and guide individuals through the 21 meditations described in the book. These classes are especially suitable for people who want to establish a daily meditation practice.

What relevance does Buddhism have to my life?

Although Buddhism first appeared in India over two and a half thousand years ago, it has a timeless and universal relevance. In a nutshell, Buddha explained that all our problems arise from confused and negative states of mind. He taught methods for ridding the mind of these destructive states and thereby realizing true happiness and fulfillment. These methods work for any mind, in any country, in any age.
